VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: TIOGA'S DUNCANSON, SILVESTRI, SAYRE'S BENNETT ARE BISHOP BROTHERS CONSTRUCTION 'ATHLETES OF THE WEEK' (2024-01-01)

THE VALLEY - Tioga seniors Ousmane Duncanson, and Gianni Silvestri, and Sayre senior Layla Bennett each captured titles at holiday wrestling tournaments. They are the Valley Sports Report / Bishop Brothers Construction "Athletes of the Week," for the week ending Dec. 30.

TIOGA’S DUNCANSON, SILVESTRI SHARE BISHOP BROTHERS CONSTRUCTION BOYS "ATHLETE OF THE WEEK" HONORS
Silvestri was 4-0 to win the 138-pound title, while Duncanson was 4-0 to claim the 160-pound crown at the annual Windsor Christmas Tournament.

Silvestri notched pins in his first two bouts, then knocked off a pair of state-ranked wrestlings, scoring a 16-6 major decision over Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Jacob McVige in the semifinals, and a 3-0 decision over Lowville’s Patrick Grimsley in the finals.

Duncanson, the top-ranked 160-pounder in the state, registered falls in his first three bouts, including a third-period pin of stater-ranked Brady Lynch of Indian River in the semifinals. In the finals, Duncanson scored a 9-2 decision over two-time state-placer Vandavian Way, ranked second in the state at 160.

Waverly’s Joey Tomasso (basketball), Athens’Conner Mosher (basketball), Sayre’s Zach Senese (basketball), Sayre’s Jordan Brown (wrestling), Waverly’s Xavier Watson (basketball), and Tioga’s Evan Sickler (basketball).

SAYRE’S BENNETT NAMED BISHOP BROTHERS CONSTRUCTION GIRLS "ATHLETE OF THE WEEK"

Bennett was 3-0 — all by fall — Wednesday to win the 124-pound title at the Mrs. Claus’ Bedlam for the Belt Girls Holiday Classic in Allentown.

Bennett scored a first-period fall in her first bout, then led 10-0 before finishing off the pin in her second bout. She claimed gold with a 45-second pin in the finals.

Honorable Mention: Waverly’s Ryleigh Judson (basketball), Tioga’s Marci Moniz (wrestling), Tioga’s Amelia Toomey (wrestling), and Tioga’s Taliah Speer (basketball).
