NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: TROY PULLS AWAY IN 54-28 WIN OVER ATHENS (2024-01-03)
Valley Sports ReportTROY — Troy used a 6-0 spurt to end the first half with a 10-point lead, then blew the game open in the third quarter on the way to a 54-28 win over Athens here Wednesday night in NTL Large School girls basketball action at the Commons Building.
The Wildcats trailed 8-6 at the end of the first eight minutes, 17-13, with less than two minutes remaining in the half, but the Trojans opened the lead to 23-13 at the intermission.
"I’m proud of the girls they way battled against one of the best teams in area," said Athens coach Brian Miller.
Giana Renzi scored 10 points in the third quarter to lead Troy in a 22-12 run that pushed the lead to 45-25 entering the final eight minutes.
Troy only scored nine points in the final stanza, but held Athens to one field goal in a 9-3 game-closing spurt.
Junior Addy Wheeler led Athens with 14 points, four rebounds, five steals, and two blocked shots, while freshman McKenna Jarvis had six points, and three boards, sophomore Abby Burgess added five points and two assists, senior Kendra Merrill grabbed five rebounds, and freshman Brielle Mayo chipped in with two steals, and one blocked shot.
Renzi and Kailyn Sterling led Troy with 12 points apiece.
Athens, now 3-6, returns to action Tuesday at Towanda.
