STAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: OWEGO KNOCKS OFF WAVERLY, 50-36, IN BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE (15 PHOTOS) (2024-01-17)

WAVERLY - Owego held Waverly to seven first-half points on its way to a 13-point lead in a 50-36 victory here Wednesday night in STAC Central Division girls basketball action.

With the win, the River Hawks move to 6-1 in divisional play, breaking out of a first-place tie with the Wolverines, now 7-3 overall, and 5-2 in Central Division play.

Freshman Ryleigh Judson knocked down a 3-pointer, but it was the only field goal in the opening eight minutes for the Wolverines, who were 2-for-6 from the free-throw line in the stanza. Owego had five different players score a bucket to take a 10-5 lead.

Taylor Dalton and Cassie Doane scored four points apiece in the second quarter to fuel a 10-2 run that pushed the River Hawks lead to 20-7 at the half. Eighth-grader Kendall Rockwell scored Waverly’s only two points in the stanza.

Senior Paige Robinson canned a pair of 3-pointers, and scored seven points in the third quarter, while sophomore Brilynn Belles added five points, including a trey, and Judson drained a 3-pointer, but Owego outscored Waverly, 15-14, to extend its lead to 36-22 heading into the final eight minutes.

Senior Ashlen Croft scored six points in the fourth quarter, while Belles knocked down a 3-pointer, and Robinson added a conventional three-point play, but Waverly couldn’t cut into its deficit in the final eight minutes.

Robinson led Waverly with 11 points, while Belles scored eight points, Croft added seven points, and Judson chipped in with six points.

Doane led Owego with 16 points, and Madison McEvoy added 13 points, including a trip of 3-pointers.

Waverly hosts state-ranked Hornell Friday.
