STAC WRESTLING: BEEMAN WINS WAVERLY'S FIRST STAC TITLE; WOLVERINES FINISH FIFTH (2024-01-20)

HORSEHEADS — Sophomore Troy Beeman brought home Waverly’s first-ever STAC Championship here Saturday afternoon, winning the 285-pound title at the league championships, and four of his teammates reached the podium in the Wolverines’ fifth-place team finish.

Horseheads ran away with the team title with 218.5 points, while Windsor was second with 146.5 points, Oneonta was third at 128.5 points, Maine-Endwell was fourth with 127.5 points, and Waverly tallied 102.6.

Beeman, the second seed at 285 pounds, topped third-seeded Tye Jashan of Oneonta, 7-1, in the semifinals.

In the finals, Beeman blanked top-seeded Joe Marassi of Maine-Endwell, 7-0. Beeman scored takedown in all three periods, and had an escape to start the second period.

Welles, the third seed at 215, topped seventh-seeded Braden Reid of Norwich, 4-0 in the semifinals.

Welles then dropped an 8-1 decision to top-seeded Windsor standout Dom Weaver in the finals.

DeKay, the third seed at 108 pounds, lost via fall in 5:13 to second-seeded Maverick Beckwith in the semifinals. Beckwith hit on a five-point move midway through the second period to take a 6-0 lead, and led 8-0 at the time of the fall.

DeKay bounced back in the consolation semifinals with a pin of Oneonta’s Marshall Mahar in 3:10, then topped teammate, freshman Rhylee Stotler, 5-2, in the third-place match.

Stotler, who was knocked into the consolation bracket with a loss of DeKay in the quarterfinals, won three matches Saturday to advance to the third-place match.

He started the day with a 17-2 technical fall of Johnson City’s Donovan Scott, ten decked Horseheads’ Tanner Knapp in 1:15 in the “blood round.

In the consolation finals, Stotler forged an 8-0 win over Chenango Forks’ Peyton Hubbard to set up his rematch with DeKay.

Bowman, the fourth seed at 101, dropped an 8-2 decision to top-seeded Dylan Newman of Windsor in the semifinals, then dropped a 10-1 major decision to Ithaca’s Caleb Bergman in the consolation semifinals.

In the third-place match, Bowman lost an 8-2 decision to Horseheads’ Josh Knapp.

At 152 pounds, freshman Parker Larson scored a fall over Windsor’s Anthony Weaver in 3:42 in his first wrestleback match Saturday, but dropped a 10-8 decision to Binghamton-Seton Catholic’s Jaqwel Vaughn in the “blood round.”

Senior Jake Besecker, and sophomore Josh Silva each went 1-1 Friday, and lost their only bout Saturday.

Eighth-grader Caden Vanderhoof (116 pounds), freshman Nico Rae (124), junior Riley Pipher (160) each lost their only bout Saturday, and were 0-2 on the weekend.
