John Worthing, a redshirt junior on the Clarion University wrestling team, won all three of his bouts to help the Golden Eagles to a 3-0 record at their Clarion Duals Sunday afternoon.
One of Worthing’s wins came against a former high school rival — Athens grad A.J. Burkhart, who won a state title at Waverly as a freshman. Worthing forged a 5-1 win over Burkhart at 174 pounds to help Clarion to a 24-10 win over Kent State.
The last time Worthing and Burkhart met, Burkhart scored a 10-6 win in the fifth-place match at the Edinboro Open in Feburary of 2020.
Later in the day, Worthing pinned Long Island’s Corey Connolly in 2:22 to help the Golden Eagles to a 39-6 victory.
Worthing capped his day with a pin of Morgan State’s Cortilius Vann in 1:47 to help Clarion to a 50-0 win.
On the season, Worthing is 13-7.
Burkhart also registered a pin of Vann in Kent State’s 38-6 win over Morgan State.
In the nightcap, Burkhart topped LIU’s Connolly, 9-5, to help Kent State to a 26-7 victory.
Burkhart, who transferred from Lehigh University, began wrestling for Kent after the Christmas break. He is 4-5 on the season.
Clarion, now 7-6, wrestles at Edinboro Sunday, while Kent State, now 4-13, wrestles at Bloomsburg Saturday.
