NTL WRESTLING: CANTON RALLIES TO TOP ATHENS, 38-24, IN FINAL DUAL OF SEASON (24 PHOTOS) (2024-02-06)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS - Athens took a quick 18-0 lead, but only won one bout the remainder of the match in a 38-24 loss to Canton in the final NTL wrestling dual of the season here Tuesday night.
Freshman Landon Layman opened the night with a win over Carter Inman by injury default in their 189-pound match-up. Layman scored a takedown, and two near-fall points in the first period, and led 4-1 in the second period when Inman suffered an apparent shoulder injury and could not continue.
Junior Caleb Nason made it 12-0 for the Wildcats with a pin of Leland Pepper in 2:45 at 215 pounds.
At 285 pounds, senior Josh Nittinger took Mason Harold down directly to his back and scored a quick fall in 24 seconds to give the Wildcats an 18-0 lead.
After a forfeit at 107 put the Warriors on the board, Lyle Vermilya won Canton’s first bout on the mat, pinning Athens senior Mason Vanderpool in 4:50 to close the gap to 18-12. Vermilya had a seven-point second period, and led 11-0 at the time of the fall.
Freshman Lucas Persun scored Athens’ last points of the night, decking Joe Luner in 38 seconds to give the Wildcats a 24-12 lead.
Canton’s Carson Rockwell (disqualification), and Cohen Landis (pin) picked up six-point wins at 133 and 139, respectively, for the Warriors to tie the bout at 24-24, then Ryland Sakers gave them the lead for good, at 27-24, with an 11-5 decision of Hayden Mercer at 152 pounds.
After an Athens forfeit at 160 pounds sealed the victory for Canton, Hudson Ward put the finishing touches on the win with a 22-6 technical fall of senior Kaiden Parrish.
Athens returns to action Feb. 17 at the North Section Championships.
