NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: TOWANDA TOPS ATHENS, 48-39 (20 PHOTOS) (2024-02-07)

ATHENS — Sophomore Brynn Woodruff pumped in 21 points and hauled down 15 rebounds to lead Towanda to a 48-39 win over Athens here Wednesday night in NTL Large School Division girls basketball action.

"We didn't shoot the ball very well tonight," said Athens coach Brian Miller. "We missed some big opportunities to score from all over the floor."

Towanda, led by six points from Woodruff, built a 10-7 lead after the first quarter, then got six points from Mya Maynard in the second quarter as it extended its lead to 23-18 at the half.

Senior Kendra Merrill knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, and junior Sara Bronson scored four points in the first half to keep the Wildcats in the game.

Freshman McKenna Jarvis scored five points, and sophomore Abby Burgess added four points, and both connected on 3-pointers for the Wildcats in the third quarter, but Woodruff and Maynard scored four points apiece as Towanda outscored Athens, 13-11, to increase its lead to 34-27 heading into the final eight minutes.

Bronson and junior Addy Wheeler combined for nine points in the fourth quarter to help the Wildcats close the gap to four points, but Woodruff canned a 3-pointer to seal the win.

Jarvis led Athens with 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two blocked shots, while Bronson had nine points, eight rebounds, and four assists, and Merrill scored seven points.

Burgess added six points, three rebounds, and two assists for Athens, and Wheeler chipped in with four points, three rebounds, three assists, seven steals, and one blocked shots.

Maynard scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Black Knights, and Woodruff added to her double-double with three assists, four blocked shots, and five steals.

Athens, now 7-12, hosts Williamson Friday night.
