Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY - Waverly got off to a fast start, fended off a third-quarter rally, and topped Chenango Valley, 35-24, here Thursday night to clinch the Southern Tier Athletic Conference junior varsity girls basketball Central Division title.

"With a lot of question marks after joining the STAC this season, I’m proud of the work and effort this group of girls have given from day one," said Waverly coach Brian Wendela. "They have come a long way since the first day of practice and they were a pleasure to see every day in the gym.

"They showed a lot of toughness and cohesiveness as a group and earned the right to be division winners.

"I’m really just super-proud to have been their coach this season," added Wendela. "The future is bright for Waverly girls basketball."

Kaitlyn Sutton knocked down a 3-pointer in the first quarter to help Waverly to a 7-2 lead after the first eight minutes.

Kaylin Twedt and Lecksie Douglas scored four points apiece in the second quarter to fuel a 10-4 run that extended Waverly’s lead to 17-6 at the half.

Three-pointers by Sutton and Twedt helped Waverly extended its lead to 25-9 early in the third quarter.

With Waverly subbing freely, CV scored eight straight points to close the gap to 25-17, which forced Wendella to insert his starters.

Sutton knocked down a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the quarter to give the Wolverines a 28-17 lead heading in the final eight minutes.

Sutton and Twedt connected on 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 34-17, and seal the win.

Sutton led Waverly with 14 points, including four 3-pointers, while Twedt scored 13, and Douglas chipped in with six points.

Waverly, now 13-4, wraps up the regular season tonight at home against Horseheads.
