ATHENS — Athens played strong first and fourth quarters, and pulled out a 24-15 win in a defensive battle against Williamson here Friday night in NTL junior varsity girls basketball action.

The Wildcats led 7-2 after the first seven minutes, and 11-5 at the half.

After Williamson trimmed a point of the lead in the third, Athens led 16-11 entering the fourth quarter, but closed the game with an 8-4 run to sew up the victory.

Brielle Mayo led Athens with eight points, six rebounds, two assists, and six steals, while  Megan Morgan had seven points, nine rebounds, three steals, and one blocked shot, and Ava Hughes added five points, three rebounds, two steals, and one blocked shot.

Kelsie Noel hauled down 10 rebounds in the win, and Lizzie Gorsline dished out three assists.

Athens returns to action Monday when it hosts Notre Dame.
