NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: ATHENS RIDES STRONG THIRD QUARTER TO 37-29 WIN OVER NOTRE DAME (24 PHOTOS) (2024-02-12)

ATHENS - Athens used a big third quarter to take control of the game en route to a 37-29 win over Notre Dame here Monday night in non-league girls basketball action.

"Addy Wheeler had a great floor game tonight, and we played a good team game versus their zone defense," said Athens coach Brian Miller.

The Wildcat win came despite Mallory Sheehan’s 25-point effort for the Crusaders.

"Shout out to Mallory Sheehan," said Miller. "She was impressive in many aspects of the game tonight — she is a very very good player."

Sophomore Abby Burgess knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter, and junior Addy Wheeler added one from behind the arc, but it was only good enough for a 9-9 tie at the end of the opening eight minutes.

Freshman McKenna Jarvis scored four points in the second quarter, and Wheeler knocked down a 3-pointer, but Sheehan scored all of Notre Dame’s nine points in the stanza, and teams went to the halftime intermission deadlocked at 18-18.

Wheeler connected on a pair of 3-pointers, and scored eight points in the third quarter, and junior Sara Bronson added four points in a 14-5 blitz that gave the Wildcats a 32-23 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

Athens only scored five points in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer by Burgess, but its defense limited Sheehan to six points in the stanza. Sheehan scored all 20 of Notre Dame’s points after the first quarter.

Wheeler led Athens with 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and eight steals, and Burgess had 11 points, four assists, and four steals.

Jarvis had four points, five rebounds, and two steals in the win, while Bronson added four points, and five rebounds, and senior Kendra Merrill chipped in with three boards, and two assists.

Athens, now 8-13, wraps up the regular season Thursday at home against Wyalusing.
