NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: SAYRE DROPS A CLOSE ONE; FALLS 48-45 TO COWANESQUE VALLEY (24 PHOTOS) (2024-02-14)
Valley Sports ReportSAYRE - Sayre played its best offensive game of the season, but came up just short in a 48-45 loss to Cowanesque Valley here Wednesday night in NTL Small School Division girls basketball action.
The Redskins' two closest games this season were against the Indians. They lost 29-27 at CV on Jan. 11.
CV jumped out to an 11-3 lead, but Sayre scored the finals seven points of the first quarter, and trailed 11-10. Senior Meghan Flynn knocked down a pair of 3-pointer in the opening eight minutes.
Junior Abbie McGaughey scored seven points, including a 3-pointer, in the second quarter, and Flynn canned two more 3-pointers, but CV matched Sayre’s output, and led 24-23 at the halftime intermission.
McGaughey connected on a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter, and Flynn buried her fifth 3-pointer, but the Indians outscored Sayre, 14-11, and led 38-34 heading into the final eight minutes.
Sophomore Rylee Lantz scored six points in the fourth quarter, but CV’s Erin Churchill scored eight points in the final eight minutes to help the Indians preserve the win.
Flynn led Sayre with a season-high 16 points, including five 3-pointers, three rebounds and two assists, while McGaughey had a season-high 15 points, four rebounds, and one blocked shot, and Lantz had a season-high 10 points, six rebounds, and one blocked shot.
Freshman Payton Black had five rebounds, and blocked three shots for the Redskins, and senior Lizzy Shaw added three boards.
Churchill led CV with 17 points, while Maddie Millard and Ashley Woodring scored 13 points apiece.
Sayre closes out the regular season Friday at home against Canton.
