VESTAL — Sophomore Derek Johnson rolled a 700 series to lead Waverly to the team title at the Section IV, Class C Championship here Friday afternoon at Midway Lanes.

“We went into the day having a good idea of how the lanes were going to play,” said Waverly coach Derek Bowman. “The guys  seemed comfortable with the plan.

“After the first game, we were sitting fourth and recognized their was a little more hook at the back end than anticipated,” noted Bowman. “I think the big thing was the grit. Down after the first two games, we bowled a good third game getting through the transition and showed tremendous resilience.

“I’m just really proud of the guys stepping up when needed it the most,” he added.
