SECTION IV BOWLING: JOHNSON LEADS WAVERLY TO CLASS C CHAMPIONSHIP (2024-02-16)

VESTAL - Sophomore Derek Johnson rolled a 700 series to lead Waverly to the team title at the Section IV, Class C Championship here Friday afternoon at Midway Lanes.

"We went into the day having a good idea of how the lanes were going to play," said Waverly coach Derek Bowman. "The guys seemed comfortable with the plan.

"After the first game, we were sitting fourth and recognized their was a little more hook at the back end than anticipated," noted Bowman. "I think the big thing was the grit. Down after the first two games, we bowled a good third game getting through the transition and showed tremendous resilience.

"I’m just really proud of the guys stepping up when needed it the most," he added.

The Wolverines won the team title with 3,086 pins, just 60 pins head of Sidney, which had 3,206. Susquehanna Valley was third with 3,010 pins, Union Springs / Port Byron was fourth with 2,835, and Oxford was fifth with 2,815. Tioga placed ninth with 2,571 pins.

Johnson rolled a 708 series on games of 217, 234, and 257, while senior Dominick Wood shot a 608 on games of 231, 163, and 214, and senior Carter Hayes had a 600 on games of 164, 224, and 212.

Sophomore Tristan Campbell added a 597 series for the Wolverines on games of 203, 188, and 206, and senior Trenton Sindoni added a 573 on games of 197, 204, and 172.

Waverly returns to action next weekend in the State Qualifier at the Valley Bowling Center.
