PIAA WRESTLING: ATHENS' VANDERPOOL FACES RETURNING PLACE-WINNER IN OPENING ROUND AT CLASS AA CHAMPIONSHIPS (2024-03-05)

HERSHEY, Pa. — Athens senior Mason Vanderpool (34-16) will face Trinity sophomore Will Detar, a third-place finisher at States last year, (33-3) in his first match in the 114-pound weight class at the PIAA Class AA Championships here Thursday morning at the Giant Center.

The top four seeds in the weight class are defending state cham senior Ayden Smith (45-2) of Notre Dame-Green Pond, Cranberry sophomore Dalton Wenner (37-4), who placed seventh at States last year, Charters-Houston senior Jorden Williams (34-7), a three-time state qualifier, and Line Mountain freshman Brock Rothermel (38-3).

Also in action this weekend from the NTL are Canton’s Hudson Ward, Lyle Vermilya, and Hudson Ward, as well as Towanda’s Mason Higley, Riley Vanderpool, and Sawyer Robinson, and North Penn-Liberty’s Brayden Pequignot and Bryce Pequingot.

Sullivan County will have Colton Ward, Andrew Kapec, and Kruz McCusker in action.

Action begins Thursday at 9 a.m.
