STAC BASEBALL: PERRY BELTS TWO HOME RUNS, POWERS WAVERLY TO 16-5 WIN OVER CHENANGO VALLEY (24 PHOTOS) (2024-04-09)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Senior Ethan Perry hit a pair of home runs, and drove in seven runs to power Waverly to a 16-5 win over Chenango Valley here Tuesday afternoon in STAC Central Division baseball action.
Perry gave the Wolverines a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a blast over the left-field fence to score senior Jay Pipher, who led off the game with a line-drive double.
With one out, freshman Matthias Welles ripped a triple into the right-center field gap, and scored on an RBI single up the middle by senior Jake VanHouten to make it 3-0.
Waverly sent 12 runners to the plate in the second inning, and stretched its lead to 12-0.
Pipher led off the inning with an infield single, stole second base, and scored on a line-drive double to left field by Perry to make it 4-0.
After a single by senior Joey Tomasso, and a walk to Welles loaded the bases, VanHouten worked a bases-loaded walk to force home a run, and senior Sean Bubniak grounded an RBI single into left field to extend the lead to 6-0.
Ault drove home a run with a fielder’s choice grounder to up the advantage to 7-0, then freshman Benny Shaw walked to re-load the bases, and sophomore Hogan Shaw walked to force home a run.
Pipher made it 9-0 with a fielder’s choice grounder, and Perry finished off the scoring with a three-run bomb over the left-field fence to push the lead to 12-0.
Ault cruised through the first four innings, but walked four batters, and gave up a bases-clearing double in the fifth inning as CV closed the gap to 12-4.
Sophomore Porter Daddona relieved and walked the first two batters he faced to re-load the bases. After notching a strikeout, Daddona uncorked a wild pitch to make it 12-5, before ending the rally with another strikeout.
The Wolverines answered with four runs in the home half of the inning in a rally that featured RBI singles by Perry, and Bubniak, and RBI doubles by Tomasso, and Welles to make it 16-5.
Perry was 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, four runs scored, and seven RBI, and Pipher was 3-for-4 with four runs scored, four stolen bases, a double, and one RBI to pace Waverly’s 15-hit attack.
Welles tripled and doubled, scored three runs, and drove in one run in the win, while Tomasso doubled and singled, scored two runs, and knocked in one run, Bubniak singled twice, and had two RBI, VanHouten singled, scored one run, and drove in two runs, Ault singled and scored one run, and Ben Shaw crossed the plate once.
Ault earned the win, allowing five runs on one hit, while striking out four and walking seven in 4 1/3 innings.
Daddona struck out two and walked two in two-thirds of an inning of scoreless relief, and 8th-grader Jack Pipher gave up one hit, walked one, and struck out one in one inning of scoreless relief.
Waverly, now 5-0, returns to action Wednesday at Chenango Valley.
