LOWELL, Mass. — Waverly grad Wendi Hammond had a big day in the circle, and a grand day in the batter’s box to lead Albany to a 9-1 five-inning win over UMass-Lowell here Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Hammond allowed one run on three infield singles, while striking out three and walking two in five innings of work to earn the win.

At the plate, Hammond slugged a grand slam to cap a five-run first-inning.

On the season, Hammond is 13-5 with a career-low 2.16 ERA, and 62 strikeouts in 97 1/3 innings.. She has 11 complete games, and two shutouts, including a no-hitter, in 14 starts, and 18 appearance.

At plate, Hammond had five hits in 28 at-bats (.179) with one double, one home run, four RBI, three runs scores, and two stolen bases.

Albany, now 18-7, returns to action Saturday with a doubleheader at Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I.
