Valley Sport Report
WAVERLY — Senior Olivia Robinson pitched a complete-game gem, and her teammates provided more than enough run support in a 7-2 win over Chenango Forks here Monday afternoon in STAC Central Division softball action.

“Liv Robinson was outstanding tonight in the circle,” said Waverly coach Brent Doane. “She really hit spots, got ahead in counts, and pounded the strike zone.

“I was very pleased with her performance, and Hannah Carpenter called a great great game behind the plate,” he noted.

“We played our most complete game tonight” added Doane. “Defensively, we still made a couple mistakes. but improved from previous games.”

Robinson helped her own cause with a one-out double in the second inning. She scored moments later on an RBI single by junior Meghan Apgar to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.

Junior Makayla Esau sparked Waverly’s next rally in the home half of the third inning with a one-out single to center field. Three pitches later, junior Brinn Cooney slashed a line-drive RBI triple into the gap to make it 2-0. Cooney scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Maddie Cron to extend the lead to 3-0.

“(Brinn) Cooney hit the ball well tonight,” said Doane. “She is really coming around in the leadoff spot.

“Our offense is starting to click a little,” he added.

Freshman Hannah Carpenter re-ignited the rally with a single up the middle, and sophomore Delaney Wheeler reached on a dropped third strike that allowed Carpenter to reach third base. Junior Loralye Anthony plated both runners with a two-RBI triple to make it 5-0.

Forks plated unearned runs in the fourth and fifth innings to close the gap to 5-2, but Waverly answered with two runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Cron, and an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Wheeler.

Robinson allowed two unearned runs on five hits, while striking out seven and walking none in seven innings to earn the win.

Carpenter was 3-for-3 with a run scored to lead Waverly’s 11-hit attack, while Cooney tripled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run, and Apgar singled twice, and knocked in one run.

Anthony tripled and drove in two runs in the win, while Cron singled, scored one run, and knocked in two runs, Robinson doubled and scored one run, Esau singled and scored one run, and Wheeler scored one run, and drove in one run.

Waverly, now 3-2, returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Owego.
