NTL BASEBALL: SAYRE RALLIES TO EDGE SULLIVAN COUNTY, 10-9 (24 PHOTOS) (2024-04-15)

Valley Sport Report
SAYRE — Sophomore Karter Green pitched five strong innings in relief, and Sayre rallied from early deficits to pull out a 10-9 win over Sullivan County here Monday afternoon in non-league baseball action on Ralph Hendershot Field at Riverfront Park.

“The game started off slow with our usual fielding errors, but the boys dug in and came back with grit and determination at the plate,” said Sayre coach Todd Green. “I am very proud of the boys; they dug deep and found the will to want to win tonight.

“At the plate, we had some clutch hits at the right times,” noted Green. “Will Crossett, Logan Zingeser, and Tieryn Walmsley led the charge at key moments.

“If and when we can get our errors under control, we will be a team in the running,” added Green. “I hope we get there soon, and grow to the skill levels we need to be at to be that team.”

Green allowed two unearned runs on two hits, while striking out eight and walking none in five innings of relief to earn the win.

“Karter Green came in and finished with five strong innings on the bump,” said Green. “He had a very good outing for us today for the win.”

Sullivan County opened the scoring with three runs on three hits in the top of the second inning, but the Redskins countered with five runs in the home half of the inning.

Tanner Green singled to lead off the rally, then stole second and took third on a wild pitch. With one out, sophomore Logan Zingeser worked a walk, and freshman Shane Strickland followed with an RBI single to close the gap to 3-1.

After a walk to junior Nick Pellicano, senior Will Crossett delivered a two-run double to tie the game at 3-3, and senior Kaden Bennett put the Redskins ahead, 4-3, with an RBI single.

Karter Green capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3.

The Griffins answered quickly turning a single, two base on balls, and two errors into four runs, and a 7-5 lead after 2 1/2 innings.

In the home half of the third, senior Andrew Lynch and Zingeser hit back-to-back one-out singles. With the runners on second and third, Strickland grounded out to drive in a run, and Pellicano stroked a line-drive single up the middle to tie the game at 7-7.

Bennett led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a line-drive single, After Karter Green was hit by a pitch, junior Tieryn Walmsley hit an RBI double to left field to put the Redskins up 8-7.

Following a walk to senior Tanner Green, Zingeser lined a two-run single into center field to extend the lead to 10-7.

The Griffins used a pair of errors to close the gap to 10-9 in the top of the fifth inning, and had the tying run on first, but Karter Green registered a strikeout, and Tanner Green threw the runner out trying to steal second base to end the inning.

Karter Green pitched around an error in the sixth inning, then struck out the side in order in the seventh to preserve the win.

Bennett started on the mound for the Redskins, allowing seven runs — four earned — on five hits, while walking three and striking out one in two innings.

“Kaden Bennett threw well, considering he hasn't thrown since Little League,” said Green. “I am very pleased with his outing. Take the errors away and miscues, he threw a decent game.”

Bennett had three hits, one run scored, and one RBI to lead Sayre at the plate, while Zingeser singled twice, scored two runs, stole two bases, and drove in two runs, Crossett doubled and singled, scored one run, and knocked in two runs, and Strickland singled twice, scored one run, and had two RBI.

Walmsley doubled, scored one run, and drove in one run in the win, while Pellicano and Karter Green each singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, Tanner Green singled, scored one run, and stole two bases, and Lynch singled and scored one run.

Sayre, now 2-2, returns to action Tuesday when it travels to North Penn-Mansfield.
