NTL GIRLS TRACK & FIELD: ATHENS' BRONSON BREAKS OWN SCHOOL RECORD, BURGESS REACHES PODIUM AT RUGGED RIDDICK INVITE (2024-04-21)
Valley Sports ReportSHIPPENSBURG — Athens junior Sara Bronson broke her own school record in the 1,600-meter run, and sophomore Abby Burgess reached the podium Saturday at the rugged Riddick Track & Field Invitational here at Shippensburg University.
"Sara and Abby both had really good days," said Athens coach Mike Bronson. "This is a really high-level meet, they only accept a certain number of athletes per event, and the girls both really competed well.
"The 1600 went out really fast, Sara tucked into a group and then moved up on the last lap to run a 7-second PR, smashing her own school record," noted Bronson. "The wind kicked up to almost 20 miles per hour for the races later in the afternoon, which made things a little tougher.
"Abby ran a really solid 400, and then came back to run a great 200.
"I think this was good to give both of the girls the experience of running in a big meet with really deep fields," he added.
Junior Sara Bronson placed ninth in the 1,600-meter run in a time of 5:13.11, breaking her own school record by more than seven seconds.
Bronson also placed 15th in the 800-meter run in a personal-best time of 2:24.2.
Sophomore Abby Burgess placed seventh in the 200-meter dash in 26.76 seconds, and was 17th in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.98.
Athens returns to action Tuesday at Canton.
