NTL TRACK & FIELD: QUAD-WINNERS BRONSON, BURGESS LEAD ATHENS GIRLS TO WINS OVER WELLSBORO, CANTON; BOYS SPLIT (24 PHOTOS) (2024-04-23)
Valley Sports ReportCANTON - Junior Sara Bronson, and sophomore Abby Burgess each won four events to lead the Athens girls to wins over Wellsboro and Canton here Tuesday in an NTL track & field tri-meet, while junior James Friend and sophomore Brenden Comstock were double-winners to help the Athens boys to a split.
GIRLS
Athens 86, Wellsboro 55, Canton 48"We had a really solid meet tonight," said Athens coach Mike Bronson. "We had a bunch girls get season-bests and several district qualifiers.
"The girls are doing a great job making progress each week," he added.
Bronson led a sweep in the 1,600-meter run in a time of 6:10.0, while senior Thea Bentley was second in 6:13.0, sophomore Ava Hughes was third in 6:16.7, and freshman Brielle Mayo was fourth in 6:56.5.
Bronson also led a sweep in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:41.5, with Bentley second in 2:44.2, Hughes third in 2:54.6, and Mayo fourth in 2:57.9.
Bronson also led a sweep in the 3,200-meter run, clocking in at 11:53.1, while Hughes was second at 13:12.5, freshman Grace Ellsworth was third in 16:34.0, and freshman Haylie Horton was fourth in 16:41.4.
Bronson teamed with Hughes, Bentley, and Horton to win the 3,200-meter relay in a time of 11:28.2.
Burgess won the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.6 seconds, and junior Gretchen Schmieg was fourth in 13.5 seconds. Burgess won the 200-meter dash in 26.6 seconds.
Burgess also won the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:03.9, and freshman Delanie Patton was fourth in 1:10.8.
Burgess teamed with Bentley, and juniors Addy Wheeler, and Lizzie Gorsline to win the 1,600-meter relay in a time of 4:33.4.
Gorsline won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 50.3 seconds, while Wheeler was third in 56.5 seconds, and freshman Hannah Parrish was fourth at 57.2 seconds. Gorsline finished third in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 18.4 seconds
Sophomore Elizabeth Denlinger finished second in the high jump at 4-feet, 8-inches. Denlinger also placed second in the pole vault at 6-feet, 6-inches, while juniors Layla Grubb and Emma Renninger were third and fourth, respectively, at 6-feet, 6-inches. (Places determined by fewest misses.)
Sophomore Emma Cole finished second in the discus with a toss of 84-feet, 5-inches, and sophomore Lean Nason was fourth at 69-feet.
Senior Mya Thompson placed second in the long jump with a leap of 14-feet, 3 1/2-inches
BOYS
Wellsboro 92.5, Athens 68.5, Canton 27Comstock won the discus with a toss of 122-feet, 3-inches, and junior Caleb Nason was fourth at 105-feet, 4-inches.
Comstock also won the shot put with a heave of 39-feet, 9-inches, and Nason was fourth at 35-feet, 2-inches.
Friend won the 400-meter dash in a time of 58.1 seconds, and freshman Ryder Morley was third in 1:00.8.
Friend teamed with sophomores Brian Tang, Alex Thompson, and Eli Vogell to win the 1,600-meter relay in a time of 3:53.3.
Junior Peter Jones won the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.1 second, and junior Brayden Onofre was fourth in 25.9 seconds.
Freshman Graham Wanck won the 3,200-meter run in a time of 10:41.9, while freshman Lucas Persun was third at 11:43.4, and freshman Alex Arcesi was fourth at 12:04.4. Wanck finished second in the 1,600-meter run in a time of 4:48.7.
Junior Lucius Mickley placed second in the 100-meter dash in 12.0 seconds, and Onofre was fourth in 12.3 seconds
Junior Jase Babcock placed second in the long jump at 17-feet, 3-inches. Babcock was also second in the triple jump at 36-feet, 1-inches, while Friend finished third at 35-feet, 6 1/2-inches. Babcock placed third in the high jump at 5-feet, 6-inches, while Friend was fourth at 5-feet.
Sophomore Chase Ingram finished second in the pole vault at 8-feet, 6-inches, and Mickley was third at 7-feet.
Tang finished third in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 47.7 seconds.
