NTL SOFTBALL: WILLIAMSON TOPS SAYRE, 17-4 (2024-04-26)

SAYRE — Williamson started scoring in the third inning, and didn’t stop on its way to a 17-4 win over Sayre here Friday afternoon in NTL Small School softball action at Riverfront Park.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with an unearned run, but Sayre answered in the home half.

Junior Raegan Parrish reached on a one-out walk, and moved to third base on a double by sophomore Abbie McGaughey. She scored on a groundout off the bat of freshman Zoey Ward to make it 1-1.

Williamson took a pair of costly Sayre errors to plate four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-1 lead.

The Redskins answered with a run on an RBI single by McGaughey, and had the bases loaded after a single by Ward, and senior Meghan Flynn reaching on an error, but freshman Rylee Lantz’s line drive was snared by the Williamson first baseman to end the inning.

The Warriors added three more runs in the fourth inning, then pushed five runs across the plate in the fifth inning to take a 13-2 lead.

Sayre closed the gap to 13-4 in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by McGaughey to plate sophomore Olivia Thompson, who led off the inning with a double, and Flynn.

Williamson capped the scoring with for runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 17-4 lead, then retired the Redskins in the home half without scoring to invoke the 10-run “mercy rule.”

McGaughey was 3-for-3 with a double, one run scored, and two RBI to pace Sayre at the plate, while Thompson doubled and scored two runs, Ward and Flynn each singled and drove in one run, and Parrish scored a run.

Sayre, now 2-7, returns to action Saturday when it hosts Wellsboro.
