STAC BASEBALL: OWEGO BLANKS WAVERLY, 3-0, IN FIRST GAME OF BATTLE FOR CENTRAL DIVISION TITLE (18 PHOTOS) (2024-04-29)

Valley Sports Report
OWEGO - Round 1 in the battle for the STAC Central Division baseball title goes to Owego in a 3-0 win over Waverly, behind a 4-hitter from junior Conlon Taylor here Monday afternoon.

"Conlon Taylor pitched very well," said Waverly coach Kyle McDuffee.

"Both teams played well tonight," added McDuffee. "It’s going to be a good three-game series"

Owego improves to 12-1 in divisional play, while Waverly falls to 11-1.

Taylor fanned seven and walked two in a seven-inning complete-game effort to earn the win.

Waverly pitchers allowed just two hits, but issued seven base on balls in the loss.

Sophomore Ronin Ault was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs — two earned — on one hit and six walks, while striking out four in 4 1/3 innings. Senior Jay Pipher allowed one hit and one walk, while striking out three in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

The River Hawks manufactured a run in the home half of the first inning when Ben Rollison led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a dropped third strike, and scored on a wild pitch.

Waverly put the first two batters — freshman Matthias Welles singled, and senior Jake Van Houten walked — on base in the top of the second, and had the bases loaded with two outs after freshman Ben Shaw walked, but Taylor induced a groundout to second base to end the Wolverines’ biggest threat of the game.

Owego added an unearned run on a two-out error in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead.

The River Hawks added another insurance run in fifth inning without the benefit of a hit, turing two hit batsman, a walk, and a groundout into a run to make it 3-0.

Jay Pipher, Welles, senior Joey Tomasso, and 8th-grader Jack Pipher accounted for Waverly’s four hits in the loss.

Waverly, 12-2 overall, returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Waverly.
