IAC SOFTBALL: TIOGA RIDES BIG FIRST INNING TO 22-2 WIN OVER NEWARK VALLEY (12 PHOTOS) (2024-05-02)

TIOGA CENTER — Tioga poured 11 runs across the plate in the bottom of the first inning en route to a 22-2 five-inning win over Newark Valley here Thursday afternoon in IAC Small School Division softball action.

After sophomore RaeAnne Feeko retired the Cardinals in order in the top of the first inning, she led off the home half of the inning with a double — the first of two hits in the inning as the Tigers sent 17 batters to the plate on its way to an 11-0 lead.

Tioga scored eight of the 11 runs with two outs in a rally that featured two-run singles by freshman Vanessa Tunnicliff, and senior Emily Bidwell, and RBI singles by Feeko, and freshman Jade Keaty.

Newark Valley scored two runs without the benefit of a hit in the top of the third inning, taking advantage of two base on balls, and three wild pitches.

Tioga answered with eight runs in the home half of the third to take a 19-2 lead in a rally highlighted by a two-run triple by Feeko, an RBI double and an RBI single by Bidwell, and an RBI single by Tunnicliff.

Keaty added an RBI single as part of a three-run Tioga rally in the bottom of the fourth inning to provide the final margin.

Feeko earned the win, allowing two runs on two hits, with eight strikeouts and five walks in 3 2.3 innings. Junior Erin Luther closed the game with 1 2/3 innings of no-hit scoreless relief, striking out four and walking none.

Feeko was 5-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, four runs scored, and three RBI, Tunnicliff was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, and three RBI, and Bidwell had three hits, including a double, one run scored, and four RBI to pace Tioga’s 18-hit attack.

Luther doubled and singled, scored three runs, and drove in two runs in the win, while Keaty singled twice, scored two runs, and knocked in three runs, junior McKenzie Williams singled twice, and scored four runs, senior Elizabeth Shaffer singled, and scored two runs, senior Megan Vance scored one run, stole three bases, and drove in one run, and sophomore Lily Mezzatesta scored two runs.

Tioga, now 9-2, return to action Friday at Owego.
