STAC BASEBALL: OWEGO RALLIES TO TOP WAVERLY, 5-3; SWEEPS THREE-GAME SERIES (12 PHOTOS) (2024-05-03)
Valley Sports ReportOWEGO - Owego plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to rally for a 5-3 win, and a sweep of its three-game series with Waverly here Friday afternoon in STAC Central Division baseball action.
With the win, the River Hawks also clinch the Central Division title.
Owego took the early lead with a run in the home half of the first inning, but Waverly responded with two runs — on a two-out, two-RBI triple by senior Jay Pipher — in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead.
Senior Joey Tomasso led off the third inning with a single, and scored on a two-out error to give the Wolverines a 3-1 lead.
Waverly starter Sean Bubniak pitched effectively around base-runners through the first four innings, but a two-out error in the bottom of the fifth, allowing there River Hawks to score three unearned runs in the four-run rally to take a 5-3 lead.
Owego reliever Connor Kotski pitched a perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts in the sixth inning, and Conlon Taylor pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to record the save for the River Hawks.
Tomasso singled twice, and scored one run, and Jay Pipher tripled and had two RBI to pace Waverly’s five-hit attack, while freshman Ben Shaw singled and scored one run, 8th-grader Jack Pipher added a single, and sophomore Hogan Shaw scored one run
Bubniak was tagged with the tough-luck loss, allowing five runs — two earned — on six hits, while striking out two and walking three in five innings.
Jay Pipher pitched a perfect inning of relief with one strikeout.
Waverly, now 12-4, has lost three in a row, and four of its last five after an 11-0 start.
The Wolverines return to action Monday at Windsor.
