STAC SOFTBALL: LATE ERRORS COSTLY IN WAVERLY'S 3-2 LOSS TO WINDSOR (2024-05-06)

WINDSOR - Windsor took advantage of two errors in the sixth inning to score a pair of runs and pull out a 3-2 win over Waverly here Monday afternoon in STAC softball action.

The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by freshman Hannah Carpenter to score junior Brinn Cooney, who led off the game with a walk.

Windsor tied the game in the bottom of the third inning on a two-out RBI single by Danica Ball.

Waverly re-gained the lead in the top of the fifth inning. The Wolverines loaded the bases on two hit batsmen, and a walk, but a base-running blunder cost them an out at home plate.

Cooney then lined a single into center field, and a Waverly runner was gunned down at the plate.

With two outs, sophomore Maddie Cron stroked an RBI single to make it 2-1.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Windsor’s lead-off hitter reached on an error. Wth two outs, back-to-back walks loaded the bases, and an infield throwing error allowed two runs to score, giving Windsor a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh, junior Makayla Esau and Cooney rapped out consecutive two-out singles, but Ball, who pitched a complete game for Windsor, notched her ninth strikeout of the game to nail down the win.

Senior Olivia Robinson was tagged with a tough-luck loss for the Wolverines, allowing three runs — one earned - on three hits, while striking out four and walking three in a complete-game, six-inning effort.

"Olivia Robinson pitched her best game of the season tonight," said Waverly coach Brent Doane.

Carpenter doubled and singled, and drove in one run, and Cooney singled twice and scored one run to pace Waverly’s six-hit attack, while Cron singled and drove in one run, and Esau singled and scored one run.

Waverly, now 8-7, hosts Seton Catholic Wednesday.
