NTL SOFTBALL: ATHENS RALLIES, BUT FALLS TO DANVILLE, 5-4 (2024-05-06)

ATHENS - Athens rallied to tie the game in the home half of the sixth inning, but Danville scored in the top of the seventh to pull out a 5-4 win here Monday afternoon in non-league softball action.

The Wildcats have lost consecutive one-run games on the heels of a six-game winning streak.

The Ironmen took advantage of a pair of errors to break a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Athens which had just two hits — singles by sophomore Maddie Hiley, and junior Savannah Persun, through five innings, got three consecutive singles from freshman Gretchan Hiley, junior Ella Coyle, and Persun to close the gap to 4-1.

With one out, Maddie Hiley ripped a two-RBI double to trim the deficit to 4-3, and junior Jules Pack tied the game with an RBI single.

In the top of the seventh inning, Camryn Hess stroked a two-out RBI single to give the Ironmen a 5-4 lead.

Coyle worked a two-out walk in the top of the seventh inning, but was stranded there.

Persun was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs — two earned — on five hits, while striking out three and walking one in three innings of relief.

Gretchan Hiley started for the Wildcats, and pitched four innings of no-hit, shutout ball. She fanned seven and walked four.

Maddie Hiley doubled and singled, scored one run, and had two RBI, and Persun singled twice, scored one run, and drove in one run to pace Athens’ seven-hit attack.

Gretchan Hiley and Coyle each had one hit and one run scored for the Wildcats, and Pack singled and drove in one run.

Athens, now 9-7, hosts Wyalusing Wednesday.
