STAC SOFTBALL: COONEY TOSSES COMPLETE GAME IN WAVERLY'S 8-2 WIN OVER SETON CATHOLIC (18 PHOTOS) (2024-05-08)

WAVERLY — Junior Brinn Cooney pitched a complete game, and Waverly pounded out 13 hits in an 8-2 win over Seton Catholic here Wednesday afternoon in STAC Central Division softball action.

Cooney allowed two runs — one earned — on six hits in seven innings, while striking out a career-high 11, and walking three.

Waverly struck first, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning on a lead-off triple by Cooney, who scored on a passed ball.

The Saints scored runs in the top of the second, and fourth to take a 2-1 lead, but the Wolverines answered with four runs in the home half of he fourth inning to take the lead for good.

With one out in the fourth, junior Loralye Anthony and senior Olivia Robinson stroked singles, and scored on a two-RBI triple by junior Meghan Apgar to make it 3-2. Apgar scored moments later on an inside-the-ark home run by freshman Lecksie Douglas that extended the lead to 5-2.

Waverly added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth when freshman Hannah Carpenter singled, and courtesy-runner senior Kailee Purvis scored on an RBI triple by sophomore Delaney Wheeler to make it 6-2. Anthony followed with an RBI single to push the lead to 7-2.

After a single by Robinson, Apgar lined an RBI single into center field to put the Wolverines up 8-2.

Cooney pitched around a lead-off single in the sixth inning, and two singles in the seventh, but finished off the win.

Douglas homered and doubled, scored one run, and drove in two runs, while Apgar tripled and singled, scored one run, and had three RBI, and Anthony singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in one run to pace Waverly’s attack.

Wheeler tripled and singled, scored one run, and drove in one run in the win, while Cooney tripled and singled, and scored one run, Robinson singled twice and scored one run, and Carpenter added a single.

Waverly, now 9-7, return to action Saturday morning when it hosts Dryden.
