NTL BASEBALL: ATHENS ELIMINATED FROM POSTSEASON CONTENTION WITH 12-4 LOSS TO EDISON (20 PHOTOS) (2024-05-13)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS - Thomas A. Edison jumped ahead early, then blew the game open in the fourth inning on its way to a 12-4 win over Athens here Monday afternoon in non-league baseball action.
With the loss, Athens falls to 8-11 on the season, and is eliminated from postseason contention.
The Spartans scored four runs in the top of the first, and two more in the second to take a 6-0 lead.
The Wildcats answered with two runs in the home half of the second on an RBI double by freshman Connor Davidson, and an RBI groundout off the bat of sophomore Nick Grazul.
Athens closed the gap to 6-4 in the bottom of the third inning on a two-out, two-RBI double by Davidson.
Edison rapped out five hits, and took advantage of three base on balls to plate six runs in the top of the fourth to extends it lead to 12-4.
Pitching dominated the remainder of the game as Edison had two hits over its final three at-bats, and Athens had none in the last four innings.
Davidson doubled twice, and had three RBI, while junior Troy Rosenbloom singled and scored one run to account for Athens’ three hits.
Freshman Kamdyn Wheeler scored two runs for the Wildcats, and Grazul had one RBI.
Senior Nicholas Jacob had the best turn on the mound for Athens, allowing three hits, while striking ut one and walking one in 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Athens closes out the 2024 campaign Tuesday at home against Canton.
