DISTRICT 4 TRACK & FIELD: SAYRE'S QUIROS PUNCHES TICKET TO STATES IN TWO EVENTS; SHIKANGA PLACES IN HURDLES (6 PHOTOS) (2024-05-18)

WILLIAMSPORT — For more than 300 meters, Sayre junior Marco Quiros trailed in the open 400-meter dash at the District IV Track & Field Championships Saturday. Then the last 100 meters he showed the field why he was the top seed, pulling ahead to win in 50.31 seconds.

"It feels really good, now I’ve just got to get ready for States," Quiros said.

Quiros tries to go out at steady pace, then pick up the pace as others tire out.

"The last 200 I just try to do a big kick," he explained. "The last 100 I try to lift my knees and get ahead."

It was tight at the top with second place finishing right behind at 50.71 seconds, but Quiros didn’t panic.

"I have a good eye about measuring how fast I had to go and how far away the other people are ahead of me," he said.

He also qualified for States in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 22.72 seconds, taking fourth in the event. The state standard (automatic qualifying time) in the event is 22.8 seconds.

Quiros took a different strategy, getting out of the blocks quickly for the shorter sprint.

"I timed it somehow," he said.

He was on one of the outside lanes, which made it a little bit more difficult for him.

"I like being on the inside more," Quiros explained. "I have people to chase, especially Xavier (Diaz) being on the inside. He had to chase me … I would have liked having to chase him."

Quiros just missed making States in the 100-meter dash, placing seventh in 11.54 seconds.

For the girls, junior Rose Shikanga got on the podium, placing sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.09 seconds.

The PIAA Championships are next weekend at Shippensburg University.
