NEW YORK STATE BOYS GOLF: TIOGA'S SICKLER 'HITS IT SOLID,' BUT SHOOTS 80 ON DAY 1 OF STATE TOURNAMENT (8 PHOTOS) (2025-06-02)
Valley Sports ReportELMIRA - Anyone who has played the game of golf know that striking the ball well, and getting good results don’t always go hand-in-hand.
Tioga boys golf coach Dave Sickler said senior Evan Sickler’s round of 80 on Day 1 of the New York State Championships here Sunday at the Mark Twain Golf Course was proof.
"80 was the highest possible score he could of had today with the way he hit it," said the elder Sickler. "He hit it very solid and put himself in great spots most of the day.
"Unfortunately, he had a few three-putts and missed a couple of kick-ins," he noted. "The greens are super fast and firm, so I think he played for a little more break on a couple, which you normally would do on slower greens like the ones we were used to this season.
"All in all, his game keeps elevating, which is fun to watch as a coach and his dad," added Dave Sickler.
Evan Sickler posted three birdies — on the par-5 third and 12th holes, and the par-4 14th hole — on the day, but had seven bogeys, and a pair of double-bogeys.
He shot matching 40s on the front and back nine.
Sickler, who is 12 shots off the lead, currently sits in 65th place in the 99-player field.
Sickler will tee off at 8:15 a.m. with Avi Meyers of Shenendehowa, and Roman Louis of Oswego.
