GIRLS WRESTLING: VALLEY WRESTLERS POWER TEAM PA. TO 48-36 WIN OVER TEAM N.Y. AT INAUGURAL DUALS ON DESMOND SHOWCASE (24 PHOTOS) (2024-06-09)

SAYRE - Five Valley wrestlers notched wins, including four by fall, to lead Team Pa. to a 48-36 win over Team N.Y., which received two wins from Valley grapplers, here Saturday evening at the inaugural Duals on Desmond All-Star Wrestling Showcase.

Tioga 8th-grader Kyah Nelson, a two-time state qualifier, dominated PIAA qualifier Isabella Gotschall, 10-3, in the third of 17 matches in the dual. Nelson’s win gave N.Y. a 9-3 lead.

In the sixth match, Athens junior Emma Renninger shook off a 9-3 deficit, and pinned S-VE’s Dakota Fanning in 4:33 to close the gap to 15-12.

Athens sophomore Hanna Rathbun gave Team Pa. the lead, at 18-15, with a pin of Waverly senior Brenae Tedesco in 67 seconds.

Sayre grad Layla Bennett added to the Pa. lead with a pin of Waverly sophomore Emma Vanderhoof in 69 seconds.

Team N.Y. reeled off three straight falls — the third a pin by Waverly sophomore Elona Holmes of Athens’ Sky Payne in 3:36 — to give them a 33-24 lead.

Athens freshman Abigail Wagner ended the N.Y. run with a 6-0 win over U-E’s Cadence Trinidad, and Athens sophomore Leah Nason pinned Groton’s Leontine of Groton in 2:42 to tie the match at 33-33.

Vestal’s Kiera DeVantier gave N.Y. its last lead of the night, at 36-33, with a 6-0 win over Athens’ Evelyn Cummings, but Pa. came through in the final three bouts.

Towanda 8th-grader pinned S-VE’s Tayah Beach in 2:48 to give the Keystone grapplers the lead for good, at 39-36.

Williamsport’s Lillian Rumsey, a two-time PIAA third-place finisher, edged Owego’s RaeAnn Craft, a two-time N.Y. state medalist, 6-4, to give Pa. a 42-36 lead.

Craft also lost to two-time PIAA medalist Anaiah Kolesar, 9-3, in the opening match of the dual.

Pa. locked up the win in the final bout when two-time PIAA champ Brenda Banks of Panther Valley, leading 3-1, scored a double-leg blast takedown leading to a pin of Waverly’s two-time N.Y. state champ Mackenzie LaForest in 4:57.
