BOYS WRESTLING: TWO WAVERLY, TWO TIOGA GRAPPLERS HELP TEAM N.Y. TO 43-31 WIN OVER TEAM PA. AT INAUGURAL DUALS ON DESMOND SHOWCASE (24 PHOTOS) (2024-06-09)

Valley Sports Report
SAYRE - Tioga and Waverly each had two wrestlers record wins to help Team N.Y. to a 43-31 win over Team Pa. here Saturday night at the inaugural Duals on Desmond All-Star Wrestling Showcase.

Tioga sophomore Jayden Duncanson, who was not originally scheduled to wrestle in the event, showed up in support of his high school teammates, and agreed to participate when asked.

Duncanson, a three-time N.Y. state medalist, squared off with Sullivan County sophomore Colton Wade, who is a two-time PIAA medalist, in the opening match of 16 in the dual.

Both wrestlers fought off deep single-legs during the first two periods, and Wade led 1-0 late in the match.

With 10 seconds remaining, Duncanson hit a lat drop near the edge of the circle for a five-point move and a 5-1 win.

N.Y built a 15-6 lead through six matches, and Athens freshman Connor Davidson earned bonus points with a 15-6 major decision over Hogsheads’ Jaxson Burchard to close the gap to 15-10.

The Empire grapplers opened up a 33-10 lead with three consecutive falls — the third being Waverly freshman Matthias Welles pinning Athens sophomore Caleb Nason at 5:42.

The Keystone grapplers answered with three straight wins to trim the deficit to 39-25, but Waverly’s Drayton DeKay righted the ship and sewed up the win for N.Y. with a pin of Athens grad Mason Vanderpool in 3:07.

Wade gained a bit of redemption with a pin of Tioga’s Logan Bellis, also a two-time state medalist, in 5:18.

The night ended with a "headline" match with three-time state finalist Caden Bellis, the 2023 N.Y. State champ who will wrestling at the University of Pennsylvania next year, forgoing a 12-3 major decision over Towanda’s state qualifier Riley Vanderpool.
