FOOTBALL: WAVERLY OPENS 7-V-7 SEASON WITH TITLE AT COACHES ASSOCIAITON WESTERN N.Y. TOURNAMENT (2024-06-10)

Valley Sports Report
CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. - Waverly, the defending New York State Class C champions, began life without five-year starter Joey Tomasso Saturday, and did so by winning the NYSHSFCA Western N.Y. 7-v-7 tournament held here at Maryvale High School.

"It was a good start to the 7-v-7 season," said Waverly coach Jason Miller. "We lost this tourney in finals last year to South Park.

"We got a little bit better throughout the day.

The Wolverines, with sophomore QB Ben Shaw at the helm, topped West Seneca East, 21-14, in the championship game to avenge a 30-point loss to ES in pool play.

Waverly also beat Hutch-Tech, South Park, and Gowanda in single-elimination bracket play.

Also competing Saturday were Maryville, Franklinville-Ellicottville, Southwestern, Cheektowaga, and Roy Hart.
