Valley Sports Report
THE VALLEY - Waverly senior Jay Pipher was near the top in the Valley in nearly every offensive category, and helped the Wolverines to the Section IV, Class B title game. He is the 2024 Valley Sports Report "Baseball Player of the Year."

Waverly senior Sean Bubniak is the "Pitcher of the Year," while Waverly senior Ethan Perry is the "Offensive Player of the Year," Sayre sophomore Karter Green is the "Breakout Player of the Year," and Athens freshman Brendan Cooke is the "Newcomer of the Year."

Waverly senior Joey Tomasso is the "Defensive Player of the Year," and Waverly’s Kyle McDuffee is the "Coach of the Year."

Pipher hit .457 (Valley-best 37 hits in 81 ABs) with five doubles, two triples, one home run, 25 RBI. He also led the Valley with 32 runs scored, and 23 stolen bases.

Pipher also walked 15 times, was hit by a pitch once, and had a .546 on-base percentage, to go along with a .605 slugging percentage for a 1.151 OPS.

On the mound, Pipher was 2-2 with 1 save and a 3.15 ERA. He allowed 22 hits in 20 innings, with 26 strikeouts and 19 walks. Opponents hit .265 against him.

Bubniak posted a 5-1 record with a 1.58 ERA. He allowed 33 hits in 40 innings, while striking out 28 and walking 18. Opponents hit .214 against him this season.

Perry hit .373 (28 hits in 75 ABs) and led the Valley with nine home runs, and 32 RBI. He also had seven doubles, one triple, 26 runs scored, and nine stolen bases.

He also walked 12 times, was hit by pitches three times, and had a .478 on-base percentage, to go along with an .853 slugging percentage for a 1.331 OPS.

Green, who hit a respectable .339 last year, led the Valley with a .540 batting average (27 hits in 50 ABs) with eight doubles, one triple, one home run, 15 RBI, 13 runs scored, and three stolen bases.

He also walked eight times, was hit by one pitch, and had a .590 on-base percentage, to go along with a .800 slugging percentage for a 1.390 OPS.

On the mound, Green was 1-2 with a 2.44 ERA. He allowed 23 hits in 23 innings, while striking out 29 and walking six. Opponents hit .225 against him.

Cooke made an instant impact at the plate, and in the field.

A 2024 Gold Glove winner, Cooke hit .412 (21 hits in 51 ABs) with three doubles, one triple, one home run, 10 RBI, eight runs scored, and one steal. He walked 11 times, was hit by pitches twice, and had a .531 on-base percentage, to go along with a .580 slugging percentage for 1.110 OPS.

A slick-fielding shortstop with a strong arm, Tomasso was part of all seven double plays turned by the Wolverines this year, and had a knack for getting behind runners at second base on pick-off plays.

McDuffee led the Wolverines to a 16-6 season in its first run through the STAC. Waverly advanced to the Section IV, Class B championship game for the second time in three years.

Shea Bailey, junior, Tioga: A slick-fielding shortstop, Bailey hit .500 (30 hits in 60 ABs), with eight doubles, three triples, 16 RBI, 30 runs scored, and 17 stolen bases.

He walked 10 times, was hit by pitches three times, and had a .589 on-base percentage, to go along with a .733 slugging percentage for a 1.322 OPS.

On the mound, Bailey was 1-2 with one save, and a 2.86 ERA. He allowed 12 hits in 22 innings, while striking out 35 and walking 17. Opponents hit .150 against him.

Karter Green, sophomore, Sayre: See above.

Joey Tomasso, senior, Waverly: The "Defensive Player of the Year," (see above) Tomasso hit .453 (34 hits in 75 ABs) with six doubles, two triples, 18 RBI, 25 runs scored, and 16 stolen bases to cap a six-year varsity career.

He also walked nine times, was hit by pitches four times, and had a .516 on-base percentage, to go along with a .587 slugging percentage for a 1.103 OPS.

Ethan Perry, senior, Waverly: The "Offensive Player of the Year," (see above) Perry was 3-1 on the mound with a 4.98 ERA. He allowed 15 hits in 19 2/3 innings with 24 strikeouts and 18 base on balls. Opponents hit .211 against him.

Brendan Cooke, freshman, Athens: See above.

Garrett Godfrey, junior, Tioga: Godfrey hit .426 (23 hits in 54 ABs with six doubles, two triples, 29 RBI, 14 run scored, and one stolen base.

He also worked eight walks, was hit by pitches four times, and had a .530 on-base percentage. He also had a .611 slugging percentage for a 1.141 OPS.

On the mound, Godfrey was 2-1 with one save, and a 3.32 ERA. He allowed 11 hits in 19 innings, while striking out 27 and walking 28. Opponents hit .162 against him.

The Second Seven
Tanner Green, senior, Sayre:
A Gold Glove winner at catcher, Green hit .356 (16 hits in 45 ABs) with five doubles, one triple, seven RBI, nine runs scored, and three stolen bases.

Green walked 13 times, was hit twice by pitches, and had a .508 on-base percentage, to go along with a .511 slugging percentage for a 1.019 OPS.

Logan Bellis, sophomore, Tioga: Bellis hit .400 (22 hits in 55 ABs) with five doubles, two triples, 14 RBI, 29 runs scored, and 13 stolen bases.

Bellis worked 14 walks, was hit by two pitches, and had a .528 on-base percentage, to go along with a .564 slugging percentage for a 1.091 OPS.

On the mound, Bellis was 3-0 with one save and a 4.38 ERA. He allowed 15 hits in 16 innings, while striking out 23 and walking 11. Opponents hit .231 against him.

Cam Rought, senior, Tioga: Rought hit .388 (19 hits in 48 ABs) with seven doubles, one home run, 29 RBI, 25 runs scored, and four stolen bases.

He also drew 19 walks, was hit by pitches three times, and had a .562 ob-base percentage, to go along with a .592 slugging percentage for a 1.153 OPS.

On the mound, Rought was 3-2 with a 6.41 ERA. He allowed 18 hits in 19 2/3 innings, while striking out 23 and walking 23. Opponents hit .243 against him.

Matthias Welles, freshman, Waverly: Welles hit .320 (24 hits in 75 ABs) with six doubles, one triple, two home runs, 25 RBI, 19 runs scored, and five stolen bases.

Welles also walked 10 times, was hit by pitches twice, and had a .409 on-base percentage, to go along with a 507 slugging percentage for a .916 OPS.

Nick Grazul, sophomore, Athens: Grazul was 0-4, but had a 2.21 ERA, and opponents hit just .218 against him. He allowed 29 hits in 31 2/3 innings, while striking out 49 and walking 16.

At the plate, Grazul hit .271 (19 hits in 70 ABs) with six doubles, one triple, one home run, nine RBI, 12 runs scored, and six stolen bases.

Will Crossett, senior, Sayre: On the mound, Crossett was 3-5 with a 3.59 ERA. He allowed 43 hits in 39 innings, while striking out 54 and walking 13. Opponents hit .250 against him.

Crossett hit .315 (17 hits in 54 ABs) with two doubles, 12 RBI, nine runs scored, and four stolen bases.

Sean Bubniak, senior, Waverly: The "Pitcher of the Year," (see above) Bubniak hit .264 (14 hits in 53 ABs), with three doubles, nine RBI, eight runs scored, and two stolen bases.

Jon Apgar, senior, Sayre: Apgar hit .341 (15 hits in 44 ABs) in his first varsity season, with four doubles, one triple, five RBI, and eight runs scored. He walked seven times, was hit by one pitch, and had a .442 on-base percentage, to go along with a .477 slugging percentage for a .920 OPS.

Connor Davidson, freshman, Athens: Davidson hit .300 (21 hits in 70 ABs) with three doubles, nine RBI, 17 runs scored, and four stolen bases. He also walked 11 times and had a .390 on-base percentage.

Zach Mumbulo, sophomore, Tioga: Mumbulo hit .346 (18 hits in 52 ABs), six doubles, two triples, 13 RBI, 11 runs scored, and five stolen bases. He walked 10 times, and had a .452 on-base percentage, to go along with a .538 slugging percentage for a .990 OPS.

Cooper Robinson, sophomore, Athens: Robinson hit .309 (17 hits in 55 ABs) with three doubles, eight RBI, seven runs scored, and six stolen bases.

Benny Shaw, freshman, Waverly: A very good defensive catcher, Shaw hit .214 (12 hits in 56 ABs), but walked 18 times and was hit by seven pitches for a .457 on-base percentage. He had two doubles, 11 RBI, 12 runs scored, and three stolen bases.

Jack Pipher, 8th-grader, Waverly: Pipher had a 1.91 ERA in 11 innings pitched. He allowed eight hits, while striking out seven and walking eight. Opponents hit .190 against him.
