ATHENS -- South Williamsport opened up a close game with four runs in the fourth inning on its way to an 8-3 win over Athens here Tuesday evening to even the Section 3 Little League Seniors Division best-of-three championship series at 1-1.

Eli Hobday led off the game with a single, and later scored on a wild pitch.

Brendan Cooke then reached on a single, and scored on an error to give Athens a 2-0 lead.

Athens shortstop Connor Davidson opened the bottom of the first inning with a diving stop behind second base, then fired a one-hopper to first baseman Matthias Welles, who scooped it for the out.

Cooke then registered a strikeout, but the next six South Williamsport batters reached base — four one singles, one on a walk, and one who was hit by a pitch — to rally for a 4-2 lead.

Neither team scored again until Davidson stroked an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning to plate Hobday and close the gap to 4-3.

South answered with four runs in the home half of the fourth to take an 8-3 lead, and Athens managed just one hit — a sixth-inning single by Hunter Vanderpoel — the remainder of the game.

Hobday stroked three singles, and scored one run to pace Athens’ seven-hit attack, while Davidson singled and drove in one run, Cooke singled, and scored one run, and Vanderpoel and Duncan Thetga each added a single. Fisher scored one run.

Brady Flynn pitched 1 2/3 innings of two-hit scoreless relief, with one strikeout and one walk, and Davidson struck out one in a perfect inning of relief.

Game 3 is Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Athens High School baseball field.
