DISTRICT 15 LITTLE LEAGUE (MINORS): ATHENS BLOWS GAME OPEN IN EXTRA INNINGS; WINS DISTRICT TITLE (24 PHOTOS) (2024-07-06)

SAYRE -- Athens poured 16 runs across the plate in the top of the seventh inning to blow open a back-and-forth affair in a 27-12 extra-inning win over RTL in the championship game of the District 15 Little League Minors Division baseball playoffs.

RTL, playing as the home team, scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Athens answered with five runs in the top of the second inning to tie the game.

RTL scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning to take an 8-6 lead, and led 10-7 after five innings.

Athens plated four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 11-10 lead, but RTL forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Athens scored 13 runs after their two outs in the top of the seventh inning, and had five hits in the inning, including back-to-back singles by Carter Johnson, and Easton Hubbard to lead off the inning.

Johnson stroked four singles, scored three runs, and drove in one run to pace Athens’ 18-hit attack, while Beau Hall had three hits, scored two runs, and three RBI, Hubbard doubled and singled, scored two runs, and knocked in two runs, and Klase Bardo singled twice, scored one run, and had three RBI,

Parker Collum doubled and singled, scored four runs, and drove in one run, while Grant Campbell tripled, scored two runs, and had five RBI, Landon Briggs doubled, scored three runs, and drove in two runs, and Lincoln Miller singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run.

Connor Robinson tripled and scored two runs for Athens, while Wyatt Raupers doubled and scored one run, Calvin Mosher scored four runs, and Jase Blair scored one run, and had two RBI.

Carter Johnson allowed five runs — one earned — on four hits, while striking out six and walking one in 3 1/3 innings of relief, and Mosher struck out one in two-thirds of an inning of scoreless relief.

Raupers earned the win, allowing two runs — none earned — on one hit, while striking out and walking one in two innings or relief.

Athens advances to the Section 3 Tournament.
