DISTRICT 15 LITTLE LEAGUE (SOFTBALL): ATHENS MINORS RALLY TO TOP TOWANDA AGAIN; WIN DISTRICT TITLE (24 PHOTOS) (2024-07-07)

WYSOX -- Towanda led midway through the contest, but Athens rallied for a 9-3 win over Towanda to claim the District 15 Little League Minors Division championship.

Athens went 7-0 in the district playoffs, including three wins over Towanda. Athens topped Towanda, 14-7, last Sunday in the winner’s bracket finals.

Towanda, playing as the visiting team, took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the second but Athens answered with a two runs in the home half to take a 2-1 lead.

Towanda countered with single runs in the third and fourth to lead 3-2 after 3 1/2 innings.

Nora Morales tied the game at 3-3 with a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning, and later in the inning Lindsey Ahern gave Athens the lead with a two-run double.

Amelia Braunbeck followed with an RBI single to make it 6-3.

In the fifth inning, Amelia Archibald doubled and continued around the bases to score and up the Athens lead to 7-3.

Sadie Wanck continued the rally with an inside-the-park home run to extend the Athens advantage to 8-3.

Morales capped the scoring with a two-out RBI single to make it 9-3.

Molly McGrath earned the win for Athens, allowing three runs — two earned — on two hits in a complete-game six-inning performance. She fanned 14 and walked eight.

Morales singled twice, scored one run, and had two RBI, and Ahern doubled and singled, and drove in two runs to pace Athens’ 10-hit attack, while McGrath singled twice and scored one run, and Wanck homered, scored one run, and knocked in one run.

Archibald doubled and scored one run in the win, while Braunbeck singled and drove in one run, Livia Powers added a single, Terrianna Orshal and Haylee Bickhart each scored two runs, and Hadley Liechty crossed the plate once.

Athens advances to the Section 3 Tournament.
