SECTION 3 LITTLE LEAGUE (9-10-11): SELINSGROVE SCORES SIX RUNS IN SIXTH INNING TO KNOCK OFF ATHENS, 8-5 (24 PHOTOS) (2024-07-07)

Valley Sports Report
ATHENS -- Selinsgrove scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to rally for an 8-5 win over Athens here Sunday night in the opening game of the Section 3 Little League 9-10-11 baseball tournament.

Xander Pyle’s two-run home run in the top of the first gave Selinsgrove an early 2-0 lead, but Athens answered with two runs in the home half of the inning — the first scoring on an error, and the second on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jacob Keene.

The score remained at 2-2 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Casyn Rowe knocked in a run with a fielder’s choice groundout to give Athens a 3-2 lead.

After a walk to Kruze Payne, Athens had the bases loaded with one out, but could not score another run.

Pyle’s second home run of the game — a three-run shot — put Selinsgrove up 5-3, and trigged the six-run rally that gave Selinsgrove an 8-3 lead.

Athens scored a pair of unearned runs without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap to 8-5.

Ethan Glielmi singled and scored one run, and Zayne Johnston singled to account for Athens’ two hits, while Colt Shores, Brady Shores, Rowan Morales, and Sophia Barrett each scored one run.

Kaden Netherton had the best turn on the mound for Athens, striking out three and walking two in two no-hit, scoreless innings of relief.

Athens will square off with Tri-Valley Monday at 5:30 in the consolation bracket, while Selinsgrove takes on Keystone at 8 p.m.
