PA. LITTLE LEAGUE (JUNIORS): ATHENS FALLS TO LOYALSOCK IN OPENING GAME OF STATE TOURNAMENT (24 PHOTOS) (2024-07-10)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Loyalsock took the lead early, and cruised to a 16-1 four-inning win over Athens here Wednesday morning in the opening game the Pennsylvania Little League Juniors Division state tournament.
Loyalsock, playing as the home team, plated four runs in the first inning, eight more in the second inning to take a 12-0 lead, and tacked on three more in the third inning to up the advantage to 15-0.
Athens kept their hopes alive with a run in the top of the fourth inning on a single by Kade Rowe, who eventually scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ryan Hicks, but Loyalsock scored a run in the home of the inning to invoke the “mercy rule.”
Rowe singled and scored one run, while Brad Shores added a single to account for Athens’ two hits, and Hicks delivered the team’s only RBI.
Athens will face Hanover, a 3-2 loser to Springfield, in the consolation bracket Thursday at 9 a.m.
