ATHENS — Waverly took control with five runs in the first inning on its way to an 11-1 win over Troy here Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of the Gilbert-Brown 8U Tournament.

Waverly tacked on a run in the second inning, and led 6-1 after three innings, before closing out the game with five runs in the fourth inning to invoke the 10-run “mercy rule.”

Ryder Wolcott was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, and three RBI to pace Waverly at the plate, while Blake Wolcott was 2-for-2 with a run scored, and one RBI, and Ethan Gray-Wright had one hit, two runs scored, and one RBI.

Levi Sharpsteen had one hit, one run scored, and one RBI in the win, while Samson Reznicek had one hit and one RBI, Kelen Roskow had a hit and a run scored, Colton Douglas added a base hit, Ellis Terwilliger scored two runs, and Henry Cheresnowsky and Brylee Sharpsteen each crossed the plate once.

Ryder Wolcott started for Waverly, and struck out four in two innings, and Douglas closed out the game with five strikeouts in two innings.

Waverly faces top-seeded Vestal Thursday.
