SECTION 3 LITTLE LEAGUE (MINORS): ATHENS GOES 0-2 AT SECTION TOURNEY (2024-07-14)

Valley Sports Report
MILLERSBURG, Pa. — Athens fell behind early in both games, falling out of the Section 3 Little League Minors Division Baseball Tournament with losses to District 24 champion Ashland and District 12 champion Loyalsock over the weekend.

Ashland 16, Athens 1

Ashland poured 10 runs across the plate in the top of the second inning to break open a tie game on its way to a 16-1 win over Athens Saturday in the opening game of the Section 3 Tournament.

After Ashland plated a run in the top of the first, Athens answered with a run in the home half of the inning when Carter Johnson scooted home on a passed ball with two outs to make it 1-1.

Ashland pulled ahead 11-1 after the second inning, and added five runs in the top of the third to bring the “mercy rule” into play.

Easton Hubbard had the best turn on the mound for Athens, allowing two unearned runs, while striking out one and walking one in a hitless inning of relief.

Athens did not have a hit in the contest.

Loyalsock 18, Athens 7
Loyalsock fought off an early rally by Athens, and scored in every inning to pull away for an 18-7 win Sunday in a consolation bracket contest.

Loyalsock scored five runs in the top of the first inning, but Athens answered with four runs in the home half in a rally that featured a lead-off single by Wyatt Raupers, a two-RBI triple by Easton Hubbard, and and RBI triple by Connor Robinson, who scored on a passed ball.

Loyalsock scored three runs in the second, and the third to stretch its lead to 11-4 after 2 1/2 innings.

Athens closed the gap to 11-6 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, but extended its lead to 16-6 after 4 1/2 innings. Athens avoided the 10-run rule with an RBI groundout off the bat of Raupers in the bottom of the fifth to make it 16-7.

Robinson tripled and singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, and Raupers doubled and singled, scored one run, and had one RBI to pace Athens’ nine-hit attack, while Beau Hall singled twice and scored one run.

Hubbard tripled, scored one run and had two RBI for Athens, while Johnson singled and scored two runs, and Parker Collum added a single.
