BOYS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY, SAYRE, ATHENS QUALIFY DOR WAVERLY SUMMER LEAGUE PLAYOFFS (24 PHOTOS) (July 18, 2024)

ATHENS — Sayre, and Athens clinched playoff spots Wednesday night, joining Waverly in postseason play in the Waverly Summer Basketball League.

Sayre earned a pair of wins, topping Trumansburg 46-42, and Tioga, 37-34, to finish 5-6, and earn the sixth seed. Sayre will face third-seeded Candor next week in the quarterfinals.

Athens edged NP-Mansfield, 53-51, to clinch a playoff spot, then dropped a 52-23 decision to Corning in the regular-season finals. Athens (4-7) will be the eighth seed, and will face top-seeded Corning in the quarterfinals.

Waverly beat Towanda, 55-37, and Notre Dame, 55-47, to finish the season at 8-3, and earn the fourth-seed. Waverly will face fifth-seeded Notre Dame in the quarterfinals.

The other quarter-final matchup will pit second-seeded Elmira and seventh-seeded Towanda.

Tioga also dropped a 65-25 decision to Notre Dame to finish the season at 0-11.
