NTL VOLLEYBALL: OPPORTUNISTIC TROY SWEEPS PAST ATHENS (24 PHOTOS) (2024-08-29)

Valley Sports Report
ATHENS — Troy took advantage of Athens hitting errors and service errors to sweep to a 3-0 win here Thursday night in NTL volleyball action.

“I know the first game we had first home-game jitters and were in our head,” said Athens coach Heather Darrow. “We came out strong the next game and couldn’t hold the lead we had.

“Our setter gave us 78 set attempts and we ended up with more hitting errors than kills,” noted Darrow. “That math isn’t going to get you a win.

“And, we had some great rallies that didn’t end our way.

“I have seen what this team is capable of, and I know what this team is capable of,” added Darrow. “We will get this. I have faith in this team and they will have faith in themselves. We just need to get out of our own way.”

Senior Kassie Babcock led Athens wit eight kills, 14 digs, three service aces, and nine serve-receives without an error, while senior Sydney Field 12 setter assists, and 10 digs, and senior Ella Coyle had 14 digs, and  20 serve-receives, with just one error.

“Kassie Babcock played extremely well tonight, with some huge saves and she really found her groove with hitting,” said Darrow. “We were just a little too far behind and had a couple too many errors.

And, Sydney Field set exceptionally well tonight it was awesome to watch,” she added.

Senior Keaton Wiles had three kills, and four digs for the Wildcats, while senior Gretchen Schmieg added three kills, three digs, and three aces freshman Ellie Mosher chipped in with two kills, and two digs, and senior Anna Geisinger recorded seven digs.

“It was really fun to watch our freshman Ellie Mosher start hitting around a very big block,” said Darrow. “And yes we did get blocked. I expect that from a 6-foot-3 middle.

“What I was super impressed with is how when we were clicking our
coverage was great,” she added.

Athens, now 1-1, returns to action Thursday at North Penn-Liberty.
