NTL GOLF: ATHENS EDGES TOWANDA, NP-M FOR 19TH STRAIGHT LEAGUE WIN (15 PHOTOS) (2024-08-29)
Valley Sports ReportTOWANDA — Athens kept its win streak alive by the narrowest margin in the two-plus years of the streak, topping Towanda and North Penn-Mansfield by three strokes here Thursday in NTL golf action at the Towanda Country Club.
The Wildcats shot a four-player aggregate score of 338, while Towanda and NP-M each shot 341, and fourth-place Wyalusing carded a 361. Wellsboro was fifth at 380, Cowanesque Valley was sixth at 424, and Sayre finished seventh at 531.
The win is the 19th in a row for Athens in NTL play. The Wildcats improve to 18-0 on the season.
“We had a good performance, the kids scrambled and made some tough pars and bogeys,” said Athens coach Lenny Pientka.
“The golf course was in excellent condition, with some fast greens,” he noted. “I was very pleased how we adjusted to the greens and putted well.
“We left a few shots out there, but I'm happy with the kids persistence and obviously the results,” added Pientka.
Senior Dylan Saxon led the Wildcats with a round of 78 to finish third on the day, while sophomore Eli Hicks finished fourth with an 81.
Senior Brady Darrow had an 89 for Athens, while freshman Ty Owen carded a 90, and freshman Brooke Lyon and sophomore Lucas Greninger added non-scoring rounds of 95 and 99, respectively.
NP-M’s Andy Hermansen was low-medalist on the day with a 75, and Towanda’s Boom Thompson shot a 76.
Senior Brayden Schrader led Sayre with a 108.
The NTL golfers return to action Tuesday at Mansfield’s Corey Creek Country Club.
