NTL GIRLS SOCCER: PATTON LEADS ATHENS TO 2-0 WIN OVER WILLIAMSON (19 PHOTOS) (2024-09-04)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Sophomore Delanie Patton scored one goal, and assisted on another to lead Athens to a 2-0 win over Williamson here Wednesday afternoon in NTL girls soccer action at Alumni Stadium.
“We played a very well-coached and organized team who gave us some fits in moments,” said Athens coach Rich Pitts.
“When we played like we can and valued the ball, I thought we were dominating,” he noted. “We just need to string more of that together over longer periods of time.
“I loved our two goals as I think that’s how dangerous (Delanie) Patton can be on the ball and with her passing to set up others.
“EJ (Denlinger) and the defense played strong and Carm (Pomaquiza) had a huge save in the first half to get the clean sheet,” added Pitts.
Patton broke the ice about 3 1/2 minutes with a shot over the head of the Williamson keep from about 18 yards out to make it 1-0.
With 8:10 remaining in the first half, Patton slid a pass through the box to senior Addy Wheeler, who delivered a shot into the net to extend the lead to 2-0.
Athens had a 12-6 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Carmelita Pomaquiza recorded five saves in net for the Wildcats.
Athens, now 3-0, returns to action Saturday when it hosts NP-Mansfield at 9 a.m.
