VOLLEYBALL: TIOGA REACHES GOLD BRACKET SEMIS AT CORNING TOURNAMENT; WAVERLY FINISHES 1-7 IN POOL PLAY (2024-09-07)
Valley Sports ReportCORNING — Tioga opened its 2024 season by reaching the semifinals of the Gold Bracket here Saturday at the Corning Volleyball Tournament, while Waverly struggled and did not advance out of pool play.
Tioga went 5-3 in pool play to place second, edging North Penn-Liberty via a tiebreaker. The Tigers lost to Elmira in the semifinals of the Golf Bracket playoffs.
Corning, which won the pool with a 7-1 mark, beat Tioga 25-21, and 25-16, and suffered its only setback in a split with NP-L, beating the Mounties 25-17 before dropping a 25-13 decision.
Tioga also split with NP-L, dropping the first set, 25-23, and winning the second, 25-19.
The Tigers swept Waverly (25-9 and 25-21), and Letchworth (25-20 and 25-19).
Waverly went 1-7 in pool play. Its only win came in a split with Letchworth, a 25-23 win in the second set, after it dropped a 25-18 decision in the first set.
Tioga opens its dual season Tuesday at home against Newark Valley, while Waverly (0-1) travels to Windsor.
