NTL VOLLEYBALL: ATHENS TAKES FIRST SET; UNBEATEN WELLSBORO RALLIES FOR 3-1 WIN (2024-09-12)

ATHENS — Athens won the first set, but unbeaten Wellsboro regrouped, and rallied for a 3-1 win here Thursday in NTL Large School Division volleyball action.

The Hornets are coming off a win over North Penn-Liberty Tuesday, snapping the Mountaineers’ 99-match NTL win streak.

The Wildcats opened with a 25-18 win in the first set, but Wellsboro bounced back to win the next three sets by scores of 25-13, 27-25, and 25-14.

“This was an awesome match,” said Athens coach Heather Darrow. “The girls played extremely hard, and played well together as a team.”

Senior Kassie Babcock registered 16 kills, 21 digs, 22 serve-receives with just three errors, and four aces to lead the Wildcats, while senior Ella Coyle had 33 digs, two assists, 29 serves-receives with just three errors, and two aces, and senior Sydney Field had 18 setter assists and eight digs.

Senior Keaton Wiles had five kills and 17 digs for Athens, while senior Emma Renninger had six setter assists and five digs senior Gretchen Schmieg recorded 10 digs and three aces, junior Regan McDaniel had four kills, freshman Ellie Mosher added three digs, and senior Anna Geisinger  chipped in with two digs.

Athens, now 1-4, is in action Saturday at the Tunkhannock Tournament.
