NTL GIRLS SOCCER: 'CARDIAC 'CATS' TOP WYALUSING, 1-0, IN OVERTIME (23 PHOTOS) (2024-09-16)
Valley Sports ReportWYALUSING — Athens coach Rich Pitts has dubbed this year’s version of the Athens Wildcats the ‘Cardiac ‘Cats’ after they earned their third overtime win of the season Monday night in a 1-0 NTL girls soccer win over Wyalusing.
“We played another full game from start to finish,” said Pitts.
“I could not be prouder of the work these girls put in day after day,” he noted. “They just seem to like to play some extra time.
“We got a huge save from Carm (Pomaquiza) on a breakaway, and then Addy continues her fantastic final act with the game-winner,” added Pitts.
The Wildcats and Rams played scoreless soccer for more than 82 minutes until sophomore Brielle Mayo found senior Addy Wheeler open at the 18, and she delivered a strike into the net.
“(Coach Pitts) always encourages us to take shots from outside, especially on this field because he knows we have the legs to shoot it from deep,” said Wheeler.
“Especially in overtime, you have to take your shots,” she added.
The Wildcats improve to 6-0, and Wheeler, a four-year starter, says this season has a different feel to it.
“This team is different than the past years have been for me, and I love it,” she said.
Athens had a 14-3 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Carmelita Pomaquiza recorded two saves in net for the Wildcats.
Athens returns to action Thursday when it hosts NEB on Senior Night.
