STAC VOLLEYBALL: WAVERLY RALLIES TO EDGE FORKS IN FIVE SETS; SWEEPS SAYRE (2024-09-18)

SAYRE — Waverly had a dominant win in the first set, but had to rally for a 3-2 win over Chenango Forks, winning the final sets in extra play here Tuesday night in STAC volleyball action.

The Wolverines, playing their second of three home games at Sayre due to the ongoing gym renovation at Waverly High School, won the first set 25-13.

The Blue Devils bounced back to win the next two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-21.

Waverly, which swept Sayre Monday night, rallied to top Forks 26-24 in the fourth set, and 16-14 in the decisive fifth set.

“We have a young team and have been working through some growing pains,” said second-year Waverly coach Hailee Rote.

“We have had some great senior leadership with Lillie Kirk and Maddy Olmsted, who are stepping up as leaders both in their play and mindset,” she noted. “Brilynn Belles has also stepped up and become a true all-around player.

“Each match we are growing and getting better,” added Rote. “I am excited for our program’s progress.”

Brilynn Belles led Waverly with 18 service points, including four service aces, a team-high 14 kills, and a team-high 26 digs, while Lillie Kirk had 12 points, including six aces, five kills, one block, two setter assists, and 14 digs, and Maddy Olmsted had eight points (two aces), 27 setter assists, and 18 digs.

Ava Heath had six points, five kills, and 10 digs in the win, while Lauryn DeLill had eight points (two aces) and five kills, Emma Richards-Randall had four points and three kills, and Adriana Presher recorded nine digs.

Waverly 3, Sayre 0
The Wolverines got off to a quick start, but had to fend off a pesky Sayre team in the final two sets of a non-league sweep Monday night.

Waverly won by scores of 25-12, 25-20, and 26-24.

Belles led the Wolverines with 12 points, including eight aces, four kills, and five digs, while Heath had six points (three aces) and three kills, and Olmsted had five points — all aces, three assists, and two digs.

Kirk recorded nine digs in the win, while Mady Briggs had three points, three kills, and four digs, Richards-Randall had three points, three assists, and two kills,DeLill had three points and two kills, Addison Hunt added two kills, and Shylea Swank chipped in with three points — all aces.

Waverly, now 3-2, will “host” Norwich at Tioga Central High School Thursday night.
