NTL GIRLS SOCCER: BURGESS' LATE GOAL LIFTS ATHENS TO 1-0 WIN OVER NEB (24 PHOTOS) (2024-09-19)
Valley Sports Report ATHENS — Junior newcomer Abby Burgess scored the biggest goal of her young career here Thursday evening, lifting Athens to a 1-0 win over Northeast Bradford in NTL girls soccer action at Alumni Stadium.
After 78 minutes of scoreless action, junior Lizzie Gorsline chipped a pass over the back line of NEB’s defense, where Burgess beat the NEB keeper to the loose ball, and chipped it over her head for the eventual game-winner.
“It’s definitely not the best game we have played, but we still got the win,” said Athens coach Rich Pitts. “The girls worked hard to the final minute.”
Athens had a 20-3 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Carmelita Pomaquiza recorded three saves in net for the Wildcats.
Athens, now 7-0, returns to action Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse.
