STAC GIRLS SOCCER: SUTTON'S GAME-WINNER LATE IN GAME LIFTS WAVERLY TO 1-0 WIN OVER OWEGO (24 PHOTOS) (2024-09-19)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — About 73 minutes into the game, junior Kaitlyn Sutton found the back of the net to lift Waverly to a 1-0 win over Owego here Thursday night in STAC Central Division girls soccer action.
“This was such a hard-fought game,” said Waverly coach Tara Hogan. “Our communication was key.
“We felt like the girls did a great job utilizing our outside forwards,” she noted. “Outside-mids Madison Cron and Addison Westbrook worked overtime to make sure they supported both the forwards and defenders.
“Owego really pressed the middle of our field while we worked to go wide,” added Hogan.
“It was a hard-fought game,” said Owego coach Laurel Evans. “The girls went out and initially played great, but Waverly was able to score first … unfortunately, we couldn’t find the net.
“They are a tough team and it was a good competition for us,” she added.
With about 7 minutes remaining in the game, sophomore Makenzie Olmsted “played a perfect ball” past a pair of Owego defenders, where Sutton picked up the loose ball, and beat the Owego keeper in a 1-v-1 with a hard shot into the back of the net.
Waverly had a 14-11 advantage in shots-on-goal, while Owego had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
Junior Claire Clonch recorded 10 saves in net for the Wolverines.
“Claire Clonch recorded some great saves, one especially off a corner kick in the first half,” said Hogan. “Claire is so nonchalant and has such a sense of ease.
“We had so many great opportunities in the second half with Ryleigh Judson getting a few chances and Kiley Stillman working hard to get some powerful shots off,” added Hogan.
Waverly, now 6-1, returns to action Saturday when it hosts Chenango Forks at 1 p.m.
